Information
More simply, this is a process of inflammation of venous wall with formation of thrombus in vascular lumen. The lesion starts instantly with appearance of painful hardening along the affected vein. The skin over it is warm, with heat, edematous. It develops in limited venous region and rarely shows a trend to dissemination. Sometimes quick dissemination of the process to groin is noticed. These thrombophlebites are called ascending due to danger of thrombus dissemination into the femoral vein and in advanced cases emergent surgical intervention is necessary.
Treatment is mainly with medicines.
