An umbilical hernia occurs in the umbilical fossa or near the navel, which is a natural weak spot in the anterior abdominal wall. These hernias can occur in infants, from non-closure of the umbilical ring, but also, due to the weakness in this area, occur in adults, regardless of age. Excess weight, increased intra-abdominal pressure from excessive coughing, chronic constipation or pregnancy are cited as the cause. In adults, umbilical hernia is treated only surgically.
