Information

It happens in children at the age of 6 months to 4 years. Febrile seizure happens in 2 to 4% of the children at this age. Girls under 18 years of age are affected more often.

The percentage of children in families, whose members have had similar incidents, is increased to 10%. The main reason for arising of seizure is body temperatures elevated over 38.5 degrees. As febrile seizure arises most often in infections of upper respiratory tract, then infectious-toxic effect on the central nervous system is suggested in genetically predisposed children, which seizure threshold is reduced. There are still many obscurities about the mechanisms, which provoke febrile seizure. Usually febrile seizure arises in the initial stage of lesion, although rarely it may appear in the next stages too. Criteria for ordinary and complicated febrile seizure are the following: Ordinary febrile seizure: · short up to 10 min · the seizure is tonic, generalized  ·  does not repeat during one and the same lesion · it is not followed by focal or incoming neurological symptoms · neuro-psychic development of child is normal meningoencephalitis should be excluded in febrile seizure. Febrile seizure necessitates emergent treatment and active monitoring of child’s development.
