General information

Fetal Morphology is a key part of prenatal diagnostics, involving ultrasound examination – the primary method for detecting congenital fetal anomalies. It allows visualization and assessment of both external and internal fetal anatomy and serves as a method for detecting not only major structural defects but also “soft markers” for chromosomal abnormalities (genetic syndromes).

Fetal morphology is a highly specialized ultrasound examination of all major fetal organs and systems, recommended for every pregnant woman.

Interestingly, a significant number of fetal anomalies are observed in low-risk patients, which is why this examination is strongly recommended for all pregnant women, regardless of age.

What tests do we offer at our Prenatal Diagnostics Unit at VITA Base 2?

Combined Screening for Chromosomal Abnormalities (11.3–13.6 weeks)
– includes assessment of markers for chromosomal abnormalities, evaluation of fetal anatomy for the corresponding early gestational age, and biochemical markers obtained through maternal venous blood samples.

IMPORTANT: At our unit, we perform not only screening for chromosomal abnormalities, but also screening for preeclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction, spontaneous miscarriage/preterm birth, and placental pathology – this is done only at VITA Hospital, based on the doctoral research of Dr. Zheni Panayotova

Fetal Morphology Ultrasound:

- Early morphology (16–18 weeks) – highly recommended in high-risk pregnancies.
- Detailed fetal morphology (20–24 weeks) – a key and essential examination during pregnancy. It allows for the evaluation of fetal growth and anatomy, diagnosis of placental disorders, and blood flow assessment (Doppler studies).
- Late fetal morphology (28–30 weeks)
- Biometry and Doppler studies (34–36 weeks)
- Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT)
- Diagnostic/Invasive Procedures (Chorionic Villus Sampling, Amniocentesis) – performed in specific cases where medical indications are present.

- What are the possibilities and challenges of prenatal diagnostics?

- Early diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities / genetic syndromes
- Early detection of structural anomalies
- Early diagnosis of placental pathology
- Early diagnosis of intrauterine fetal distress
- Availability of non-invasive prenatal testing
- Diagnostic/invasive tests allowing timely diagnosis when clearly indicated
- Enables parents to make informed decisions about their pregnancy
