Information

Atherosclerosis is in the basis of carotid arteries lesions –atherosclerotic patches deposit, which constrict arterial lumen and provoke constriction and vortex of blood flow, which disturbs the brain circulation. As a result of this vortex, atherosclerotic patches may detach and lead to complete obstruction of brain arteries.

Clinical picture of lesion passes in three stages:

1. Symptomless stage there are no clinical symptoms of lesion

2. Damages of carotid arteries, provoking transitory ischemic attacks (TIA).

Transitory ischemic attacks are characterized by temporary neurological deficiency, lasting less than 24 hours and successive complete recovery. Clinical symptoms include temporary loss or dull vision of one of the eyes, strong temporary headache, vertigo in absence of other reason (proven hypertension or disturbed vestibular apparatus).

3. Damages of carotid arteries, causing insult – the most severe form

All patients with similar symptoms should consult vascular surgeon and carry out Doppler exam of carotid arteries, which is looking for constriction (stenosis) in the region of carotid arteries. All patients with past insult or such with multiple repeating insults should also consult vascular surgeon.

Treatment of this lesion is by medicines and surgical intervention.
