Information

Rupture of Axchilles tendon is the most frequent trauma , caused by sport. Except in elite sportsmen, it is found in ordinary people, most often when practice the so called “Sunday football”. Degenerative changes of tendon and overweight, which the tendon can not sustain, as well as the absence of adequate warming-up prior to loading, which aggravates vascularity, are the main reasons for its rupture. Rupture (breaking) itself appears by acute pain on the lower back part of the shank. The patient cannot walk normally, claudicates and can not stand up on the toes of the affected extremity. The best treatment is the surgical one, which should be done in the initial hours up to several days after the trauma. When the operation is delayed, both ends of tendon move apart, thus resulting in defect and the treatment is complicated. Plaster immobilization is placed after the operation for about two months, followed by specific rehabilitation.
