Thyroid gland lesions are the most frequent one. Most spread lesion of thyroid gland is its enlargement or the so called struma. Struma may exists at normal function of the gland as well as in increased or reduced one. The most frequent lesion with increased function is called Thyrotoxicosis or Basedow’s disease. It is observed – lump in the neck area, due to enlarged thyroid gland, weight loss at preserved appetite, heart racing, perspiration, hypertension, eye projection. Reduced function of thyroid gland is called hypothyroidism and it may be congenital (manifested still in newborn) and acquired (in bigger children). The lesion symptoms are delayed growth and short stature, dry skin, rough voice, delayed neuropsychic development. The frequency of congenital hypothyroidism is 1:3500 of newborn and such frequency exists in Europe too.
The acquired hypothyroidism most often is due to autoimmune lesion – the so called Thyroiditis of Hashimoto, in which struma is diagnosed by the above mentioned symptoms too.
