Preoperatively, the psychologist assesses the behavioral, dietary, family, and personality factors that could influence the treatment and recovery process. The purpose of this assessment is to increase the safety and effectiveness of surgical treatment by identifying areas of vulnerability, potential challenges, and the patient's strengths.
Why is it necessary?
Patients are often concerned when they hear that a preoperative psychological consultation is required, and wonder whether they are being considered "crazy". In fact, the preoperative psychological consultation is a routine practice in almost all medical facilities offering metabolic and bariatric surgery, and international standards require the creation of multidisciplinary teams of specialists from various fields, including psychologists. Psychologists are specially trained in how to support people during difficult periods for them, and ones associated with introducing significant lifestyle and behavioral changes (such as after bariatric surgery). They are included in the teams to increase the safety of surgical treatment and ensure greater success in achieving long-term goals.
What happens during the consultation?
A typical psychological consultation before metabolic and bariatric surgery includes filling out a questionnaire and meeting with the psychologist. During the consultation, topics such as previous weight loss attempts, eating habits and behavior, motivation for undergoing surgical treatment, expected outcomes, presence of social support, and others are discussed. During the consultation, the psychologist tries to learn more about your concerns and address them in a timely manner, and together you may develop a plan for individual support depending on your needs. A large part of the consultation is psychoeducational and aims to prepare you for the surgery and the upcoming change. At the end of the consultation, you will receive feedback and guidance.
Patients or their relatives are entitled to free psychological support during the hospital stay.
