Stoyan Ivanov graduated in Medicine from the Medical University of Sofia in 1975. The following year, he was appointed as an assistant at the Institute of Pneumology and Phthisiatry at the Medical Academy, Sofia.
In 1983, he obtained the academic and scientific degree of "Doctor" following the defense of a dissertation on the topic "Thoracic Sarcoidosis". In 1984, he obtained his specialty in Internal Medicine, and in 1986 his specialty in Pneumology and Phthisiatry. In 1988, he was habilitated as "Associate Professor" and assumed the position of Head of the Second Clinic at SBALBБ "St. Sofia" at the Medical University of Sofia, a position he held until 2018.
He has a total professional experience of 35 years in the specialty, which began at the Scientific Institute of Pneumology and Phthisiatry (NIPF), and subsequently at the Clinical Centre for Pulmonary Diseases and the Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment of Pulmonary Diseases "St. Sofia" at the Medical University of Sofia.
He completed a specialization in pulmonary diseases in Berlin, Germany.
He has served as National Consultant for Pulmonary Diseases at the Ministry of Health, as well as Editor-in-Chief of the journal "Pneumology and Phthisiatry".
He is the author of 189 scientific works, including three monographs: "Sarcoidosis and Other Granulomatoses", "Diffuse Pulmonary Fibroses", and "Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis".
He has participated in the establishment of the scientific school of "Diffuse Parenchymal Pulmonary Diseases", with his clinic serving as a center for the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary sarcoidosis and fibrosis.
