Dr. Emil Atanasov is a specialist urologist and pediatric urologist in Sofia with 20 years of experience. He graduated from the Medical University of Sofia in 2002 and holds a specialty in urology and a postgraduate qualification in pediatric urology.

Biography:
Dr. Atanasov began his career as a resident physician in the Urology Department of IV MBAL Sofia (2003–2006). He then worked for one year in the Urology Department of V MBAL Sofia, and from 2007 to 2021 in the Department of Pediatric Urology at MBALСМ "N. I. Pirogov".

Since July 2021, he has been part of the team at Vita Hospital as Head of the Department of Urology and Pediatric Urology. In that same month, MBAL VITA established the second Pediatric Urology Unit in the country.

He speaks: English, German, and Russian.

At Vita Hospital, Dr. Atanasov became the first in Bulgaria to apply European algorithms and standards in the diagnosis and treatment of children with congenital urological conditions such as congenital hydronephrosis and non-palpable testis. He is credited with establishing laparoscopic treatment as the routine method for these conditions, which offers numerous advantages: faster recovery, reduced pain for the child, and no scarring.

Dr. Atanasov and his team, in collaboration with physicians from Zurich, also performed the first robot-assisted pyeloplasties in Bulgaria in young children.

Dr. Atanasov also leads the Urodynamic Centre for the diagnosis and treatment of children with spina bifida and urinary incontinence at Vita Hospital - the first of its kind in Bulgaria. The Centre enables diagnostic assessment in an outpatient and child-friendly environment, without the need for hospitalization.
