Contributions of Prof. Dr. Stefan Ivanov Stanchev, MD, PhD:

• Patent No. 63839/02.04.2003 for the invention of an "INSTRUMENT FOR CORRECTION OF SPINAL DEFORMITIES", representing a modern three-dimensional semi-rigid instrumentation system in spinal surgery, applicable for various congenital and acquired (degenerative and traumatic) spinal deformities.
• Patent No. 802/06.06.2006 for a utility model of an "IMPLANT FOR IMMOBILIZATION OF VERTEBRAL STRUCTURES", representing an intervertebral locking system in spinal surgery for various congenital and acquired spinal diseases.

The patented inventions have been introduced into clinical practice at leading university hospitals in Bulgaria: UMBAL "I. Rilski" Sofia, UMBAL "St. Anna" Sofia, USBALO "B. Boychev" Sofia, UMBAL "St. Georgi" Plovdiv, UMBAL Stara Zagora, and MBAL Burgas.

• Defended doctoral dissertation on the topic "Surgical Treatment of Lumbar Spondylolisthesis".
• Introduced an algorithm for the diagnosis and treatment of spondylolistheses in the lumbar segment of the spine.
• Invented and introduced into clinical practice in Bulgaria his own instrumentation system "STIBU" for the surgical treatment of spondylolistheses in the lumbar segment of the spine, fully meeting the requirements of modern spinal surgery. Results of the "STIBU" system have been presented at international forums and positively evaluated by leading world surgeons in spinal surgery.
• Developed interdisciplinary collaboration in spinal surgery between leading neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons in Bulgaria and abroad.
• Published results of the clinical application of the "STIBU" system for traumatic, degenerative, and tumor-related spinal deformities, correlating with those of leading authors worldwide.
• Proposed and introduced the "Fracture Index" for the diagnosis and surgical treatment of vertebral body fractures.
• Elected as Corresponding Member of the French Association of Spinal Surgery, 2007.
• Awarded the "Golden Book" award of MBAL Burgas AD with Executive Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. St. Stanchev, MD, PhD - 2010, for outstanding achievements in science.
• Awarded the "Golden Seal" of MBAL Burgas with Executive Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. St. Stanchev, MD, PhD - 2010, for outstanding achievements in hospital management at the European level and in the field of science.
