Prof. Dr. Svetlana Velizarova, MD, PhD

Information

Prof. Svetlana Velizarova has been part of the team at VITA Hospital since June 2026.

Since 1980, she has successively served as assistant, senior assistant, and chief assistant at the Medical University of Sofia, SBALBБ "St. Sofia", holding the academic position of associate professor since 2015, and professor since 2020.

In 1978, she began working at the Pediatric Clinic of MBALBБ "St. Sofia". From 2017 to 2021, she served as Head of the same clinic, and from 2021 to 2025 as Head of the Pulmonology Clinic at SBALDБ "Prof. I. Mitev".

Prof. Velizarova performs diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary diseases in childhood. Her professional interests are focused on the diagnosis of tuberculosis, the immunology of tuberculosis and non-specific pulmonary diseases, as well as preventive pediatrics.

Education:

• Graduated from the Medical University of Sofia in 1977 with distinction
• In 1987, obtained her specialty in Pneumology and Phthisiatry, and in 1993 her specialty in Pediatric Diseases
• In 2010, defended a doctoral dissertation on the topic "T-SPOT.TB - Diagnostic Value in Various Forms of Tuberculosis and Latent Tuberculosis Infection in Childhood" and obtained the academic and scientific degree of "Doctor" (PhD)

Prof. Velizarova has over 150 publications in renowned Bulgarian and international medical journals, has participated in the writing of 7 textbooks and study aids, and has one monograph on the topic "Modern Diagnosis of Tuberculosis in Childhood", published in 2020.

Over the years, she has participated in numerous national and international pediatric and pulmonological conferences, and has trained medical students, intern physicians, and residents.
