What is anorectal abscess?
Anorectal abscess is collection of pus around anus. It is considered that plugging up of anal glands by feces or traumation of tissues is leading to infection of glandular canals and development of abscess.
The most frequent reasons are constipation, prolonged travel, reduction of immunity.
Abscess may vary from a simple inflammation to life-threatening infection. Successful treatment depends on the early diagnosis and adequate surgical treatment.
Which are the complaints of anal abscess?
The initial symptom of perianal abscess is acute pain in anal region. The pain grows gradually to become pulsating, increasing at walking, sitting, straining, coughing. Painful tumefaction may be palpated. The general status aggravates. Body temperature is increased. Spontaneous bursting out of abscess may lead to pus drainage and staining of dresses.
Diagnosis of anal abscess
The external review and examination by a specialist usually is sufficient for diagnosis. In rare cases no external symptom are available for the lesion except the complaints of elevated temperature and indisposition. Echography and puncture under echographic control is applied in difficult cases. Pus is examined to prove the causative bacteria.
What is the treatment in anal abscess?
Treatment is carried out by emergency at the surgical ward and consists of puncture and cleaning of pus collected in abscess cavity. Modern broad-spectrum antibiotics are applied.
Recovery is within a week.
