Information

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from impaired insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Diabetes is a socially significant disease due to its widespread prevalence. It is recognized as one of the most significant health problems worldwide. Currently in Bulgaria there are over 500,000 people diagnosed with diabetes mellitus, which represents 8% of the population aged between 20 and 79 years.

Types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 diabetes mellitus - resulting from beta-cell destruction, usually leading to absolute insulin deficiency
  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus - resulting from a progressive insulin secretory defect against a background of insulin resistance
  • Other specific types of diabetes - due to other causes - genetic defect in beta-cell function, genetic defect in insulin action, diseases of the exocrine pancreas, influence of medications or other chemical compounds, other diseases
  • Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) - diagnosed during pregnancy
