Information

Diskopathy and disc hernia in lumbar region occupy the greatest percentage of the lesion of peripheral nervous system. The pain in waist, disseminating to one or both legs is etiologically due to vertebral osteochondrosis, reduced intervertebral disc or prolapse of the same disc. Mechanical factor plays the main role – compression of the posterior roots. Co-focal (dental granuloma, chronic tonsillitis, biliary lesion) acute or chronic infections (flu, angina, catarrh of upper respiratory tract) contribute for the effect of the inflammatory component too. Except the pain, aggravating at sneezing and coughing, the clinical picture may have sensory disorders, often motor disturbances, reduced or missing knee and Achilles reflexes. In differential-diagnostic aspect, it should be taken into account the coxi and coxarthrosis, spondylitis, metastases and primary tumors. The correct diagnosis is impossible without X-ray and CT exams. Electromyographic exam is recommended in paresis. The treatment necessitates compulsory bed regimen in the acute stage. The medication includes non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, anti-edemic, peripheral nervous stimulators and vitamins of B group. Various heat procedures have a good effect and after the acute stage – balneological treatment.
