Hyperthyroidism

Information

Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland releases an excessive amount of hormones. This accelerates metabolism and overloads the body.

Symptoms:

• Rapid pulse and heart palpitations
• Hand tremor
• Sweating and heat intolerance
• Nervousness, irritability and insomnia
• Weight loss despite normal or increased appetite
• Enlarged thyroid gland (goiter), in some cases bulging eyes

Causes:

• Graves' disease (autoimmune disease)
• Toxic thyroid nodules
• Inflammation of the gland (thyroiditis)
• Excessive iodine intake or certain medications

Diagnostics:

• Blood tests: TSH, FT4 and FT3
• Antibodies when an autoimmune cause is suspected
• Thyroid ultrasound or scintigraphy when needed

Treatment:

• Medications that suppress hormone production
• Radioiodine therapy
• Surgical treatment in certain cases
• Additionally - beta-blockers to relieve palpitations and tremor
