Information
Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a commonly used surgical method for treating an enlarged prostate (BPH). The method is suitable for smaller prostates and gives good results, but despite this, its effectiveness cannot be compared to the capabilities of laser surgery. The aim of the VITA Hospital team is to offer our patients the latest developments in modern urology. In this regard, laser surgery is the most modern and gentle method, which in recent years has become the standard in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
What is TURP?
The surgery is performed under general or spinal anesthesia. No incisions are made in the abdominal wall. Using a special instrument (a resectoscope), the surgeon accesses the prostate through the body's natural opening (the urethra). Then, using a special loop with high-frequency monopolar or bipolar current, the part of the prostate that is enlarged and is causing difficulty urinating is cut into small pieces. These pieces are then removed from the bladder, again through the body's natural opening.
Advantages
- Bloodless
- Effective
- Minimal hospital stay (1-2 days)
- Minimal catheterization period (3-4 days)
What should I expect after the surgery?
Immediately after the surgery, a urethral catheter will be placed for irrigation purposes, which, depending on your condition, will be removed over the following 3-4 days. If recovering well, patients are usually discharged after 1-2 days, with the catheter being removed at a later point.
