A Caesarean section, also known as a C-section, is a surgical procedure in which the fetus is removed through an incision in the abdominal wall and uterus.
We speak of a primary Caesarean section (planned Caesarean section) when the parents and the physician have made the decision before the onset of labor. It is medically justified and is performed on a specific date before labor begins.
A secondary Caesarean section occurs when the transition to a Caesarean section becomes necessary for medical reasons after "normal" (i.e. vaginal) labor has already begun.
An elective Caesarean section is not medically justified and is usually for personal reasons.
