Information
A condition in which urine is retained in the renal pelvis. The causes can be external, such as compression from an outside blood vessel, or internal, most often due to a congenital narrowing at the exit of the kidney (the ureteropelvic junction). Congenital hydronephrosis is usually detected even before birth, during pregnancy monitoring. After birth, children are followed with ultrasound, and spontaneous resolution of the condition is possible. If the hydronephrosis progresses, additional investigations such as MRI and scintigraphy are performed, which show whether surgical treatment is necessary.
Following specialized training at the Children's Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland, at the Department of Urology and Andrology at VITA Hospital we apply the most modern treatment methods, popularly known as "bloodless": laparoscopic or robot-assisted. Thanks to this, children's hospital stays range from 3 to 5 days, postoperative pain is minimized, and children are left with no scar from the surgical intervention. Magnetic stents are used for urine drainage, which allows them to be removed after a month on an outpatient basis, without a new hospitalization or anesthesia.
