Information

With the development of medical technology, the possibilities for effective treatment of an enlarged prostate through modern bloodless and laser techniques have also increased. Laser surgery is the most modern and gentle method, which in recent years has become the standard in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

The aim of the VITA Hospital team is to offer our patients the latest developments in modern urology. The Urology Department is equipped with the latest generation of prostate laser - the Cyber TM Thulium 150 Watt laser by Quanta System (the so-called "red laser"), with which the full range of laser surgical techniques for prostate treatment can be performed: laser vaporization, laser vapo-resection, and laser enucleation.

The Cyber TM Thulium 150 Watt laser by Quanta System is among the most precise modern lasers for treating prostate conditions, with extremely gentle and controlled tissue penetration. You can view the full technical specifications of the laser here.

What is laser vaporization of the prostate?

Laser vaporization is performed under general or spinal anesthesia. In this type of surgery, there is no incision of the abdominal wall; instead, the prostate is reached through the urinary canal (the urethra), which is a natural opening of the body. The high energy of the thulium laser vaporizes the prostate tissue while simultaneously sealing (coagulating) the blood vessels, which makes the operation practically bloodless.

The advantages of this laser method are that it is extremely gentle on the surrounding tissues, since it has a very low penetration depth (about 1 mm), and the risk of affecting neighboring structures is very low.

Advantages of laser vaporization of the prostate:

  • Bloodless
  • Effective
  • Minimal hospital stay (1-2 days)
  • Minimal catheterization period (1-2 days)
  • Preservation of sexual function
  • Suitable for elderly patients with accompanying conditions

What should I expect after the surgery?

During the surgery, a urethral catheter will be placed for irrigation purposes, which, depending on your condition, will be removed within the following 24-48 hours. It is not uncommon to experience slight bleeding during urination for a certain period, but this will subside quickly.

What is laser enucleation of the prostate?

Laser enucleation is performed under general or spinal anesthesia, and, as with the above method, there is no incision of the abdominal wall; instead, the prostate is reached through the body's natural canal (the urethra).

The laser is positioned between the prostate and its capsule, and with the help of the laser beam, the enlarged portion is separated (peeled away) in its entirety, that is, it is enucleated - hence the name of the method. This tissue is then pushed into the bladder and fragmented using a morcellator - a special instrument that breaks up the tissue and suctions it out, again through the urethra.

The advantages of this method over other laser techniques are that there is practically no limitation regarding the size of the prostate (as there is, for example, with laser vaporization), and it can be used to treat very large glands. This, together with the fact that the laser energy is extremely gentle on the surrounding tissue and does not damage the blood vessels, makes the method bloodless.

Advantages of laser enucleation of the prostate:

  • Bloodless
  • Effective
  • Minimal hospital stay (1-2 days)
  • Minimal catheterization period (1-2 days)
  • Preservation of sexual function
  • Suitable for patients with larger prostates
  • Suitable for elderly patients with accompanying conditions

What should I expect after the surgery?

During the surgery, a urethral catheter will be placed for irrigation purposes, which, depending on your condition, will be removed within the following 24-48 hours. It is not uncommon to experience slight bleeding during urination for a certain period, but this will subside quickly.

How do I know which method is right for me?

The choice of the most appropriate method is strictly individual for each patient and depends on their condition and the urologist's assessment.
