Breast cancer is among the diseases for which early detection can be decisive for treatment options and prognosis. That is why caring for breast health should not begin only when a complaint appears.
On the occasion of World Breast Cancer Awareness Month, VITA Breast Unit at DCC VITA is organizing three days of free preventive examinations for women aged 45 and over. The examinations will take place on October 5, 6 and 7 at Base 2 of DCC VITA and will be performed by Dr. Ivan Inkov, a specialist with many years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of breast diseases.
The campaign aims to encourage women not to put off caring for their own health. The absence of symptoms does not mean that a preventive examination is unnecessary - it is precisely regular monitoring that makes it possible for suspicious changes to be detected in time.
"A woman should not wait to feel a lump or notice a change in order to seek a doctor. Prevention makes the most sense precisely when there are no symptoms. After a certain age, regular monitoring of breast health should become a natural part of taking care of yourself", commented Dr. Ivan Inkov.
The free examination includes a medical history, a clinical assessment, and a breast ultrasound. Ultrasound is a painless imaging method without ionizing radiation, which can provide important information about the structure of the breast and about the presence of cystic or solid changes.
In women aged 45 and over, ultrasound does not replace mammography when it is indicated, but complements it according to age, breast structure, individual risk, and the specific finding. If a change requiring further clarification is found during the examination, the patient may be referred for the necessary follow-up tests and consultations at VITA Breast Unit.
Modern diagnosis of breast diseases includes various complementary imaging methods. DCC VITA has digital 2D mammography and 3D mammography - digital tomosynthesis. Mammography examinations are performed at both bases of DCC VITA - Base 1 and Base 2, and women can make use of them for prevention and screening throughout the year, not only during the campaign.
In tomosynthesis, the breast is imaged from different angles, and the resulting data is reconstructed into a series of thin images. This reduces tissue overlap and makes it easier to assess certain changes that may be harder to distinguish on standard 2D mammography.
The appropriate imaging or diagnostic method is determined by the specialist according to age, symptoms, breast structure and density, family and personal history, previous examinations, and overall individual risk. Women who have previous mammograms, ultrasounds, MRI examinations, or biopsy results are advised to bring them with them, since comparison over time is an important part of an accurate assessment.
The free preventive examinations are intended for women without newly appearing complaints. If there is a lump, bloody or spontaneous nipple discharge, dimpling of the skin or nipple, redness, swelling, or another new change, a diagnostic examination is necessary and should not be postponed until a preventive campaign.
